Comprehensive Service Center (CSC) – For People who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or Deaf-Blind

About: The Comprehensive Service Center (CSC) is a one-stop support and referral service funded by the Hawai‘i State Legislature and the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation through a contract with the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Center on Disability Studies (CDS). CSC is staffed by a diverse group of people representative of the groups they serve. We provide academic classes, workshops, accessibility support, summer youth programs, and fun events that encourage the inclusion of all consumers.

Library for the Blind and Print Disabled (LBPD) 

About: LBPD provides audio and braille books and magazines for certified patrons with a visual impairment or other physical limitation that prevents them from reading standard printed material. LBPD also has the largest collection of large print books in the state and a Radio Reading Service: a closed-circuit broadcast for registered patrons which features news from the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, grocery ads, and articles and stories from other local publications.

Relay Hawai‘i – Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS)

About: What is relay service? Relay Hawaii is a service overseen by the Hawai‘i Public Utilities Commission that provides full telephone accessibility to people who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, deaf-blind, or speech-disabled. Relay Hawaii provides the equipment and the service free of charge to all qualified residents of Hawai`i or kama`aina. Relay Hawaii allows the people of Hawai`i or kama’aina to communicate with friends, ‘ohana, and anyone over the phone using text-telephone (TTY), captioned telephone (CapTel), online, and wireless relay services through specially trained relay operators. Relay Hawaii is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.  A relay operator voices everything you type and types everything you say. All Relay Hawai‘i calls are strictly confidential. No records of any conversations are maintained. The service is free for anyone to use. This service is funded by a surcharge on all telephone bills. Long distance charges may apply. Specialized Equipment to use to contact Relay Hawai‘i: People who require a TTY or CapTel phone may apply to the Relay Hawai‘i Equipment Program (RHEP).

University Health Partners – Speech and Hearing Clinic

About: University Health Partners of Hawai‘i are the faculty practice of the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa John A. Burns School of Medicine. Speech and Hearing Services are provided by a team of certified and licensed Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists. 

Speech therapy services include evaluation and treatment of:

 How a person sounds when they speak (articulation, voice, fluency, and accent modification)

What a person understands and says (expressive and receptive language)

How a person uses language to communicate (social skills and pragmatics)

How a person thinks (cognitive communication involving attention, memory, problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills)

Developmentally & Intellectually Delayed

Developmental Disabilities Division (DDD) – State of Hawai‘i Dept. of Health

About: The State of Hawai‘i, Department of Health (DOH) Developmental Disabilities Division (DDD) serves people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD) who qualify for services. The Developmental Disabilities Division (DDD) oversees a statewide system of supports and services for eligible participants. DDD uses Hawaii’s Medicaid 1915(c) Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Waiver to provide a range of services and supports in the community through state and federal funding. DDD supports participants and their families to have full lives in the community. Through an initiative called “Possibilities Now!”, DDD works with self-advocates and other community stakeholders to improve services to support participants and their families to engage in community living, just like anyone else. A DDD case manager will help support participants in their life goals through planning and coordination of services, using a person-centered approach.

The Arc in Hawai‘i 

About: They provide services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities on O’ahu.

Eligibility for Services: Participants need to be eligible for a Medicaid waiver to receive most services at the Arc in Hawai‘i. However, some services are also available on a fee-for-service basis for those able to pay.

Adult Day Health Services: Adult Day Health (ADH) services are Medicaid Waiver or Fee-for-Service services provided to participants to assist them in developing, maintaining, and improving their skills in daily living.

Employment Services: Participants who wish to pursue competitive employment can access Employment Services. Employment services are only provided to those eligible for Medicaid Waiver Services.

Residential Services: The Arc in Hawaii has partnered with the City and County of Honolulu and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in providing homes for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). With the assistance of these governmental agencies, The Arc in Hawaii has constructed or purchased three apartment buildings and 17 homes in which residential services are provided to individuals.

Hawai‘i State Coalition Against Domestic Violence – Domestic Violence Action Center (DVAC)

About: The DVAC assists domestic violence survivors on Oʻahu through case management, legal services (TROs, divorces, paternity), courtroom accompaniment, and counseling.
