What Is the ADA and Why Should You Know About It?

Have you heard of the ADA? It stands for the Americans with Disabilities Act. That’s a long name—but it’s a very important law!

The ADA helps make sure that people with disabilities are treated fairly. It helps protect your rights at work, in school, on the bus, in stores, and more.

At Work Now Hawaii, we believe everyone should know their rights. Let’s learn what the ADA is and why it matters.

What Does the ADA Do?

The ADA is a law that says:

  • People with disabilities must have equal rights.
  • You can’t be treated unfairly because of your disability.
  • Places like schools, jobs, buses, and stores must be accessible to people with disabilities.

This law was made in 1990 to help people with disabilities live whole, independent lives.

How Does the ADA Help You at Work?

The ADA says that if you can do the job, you have the right to work—even if you need a little help to do it. Learn more about it here!

You can ask for things called reasonable accommodations to make the job easier. These can include:

  • A special chair or desk
  • More breaks during the day
  • A quiet place to work
  • A job coach or support person
  • A flexible schedule
  • And More!

Your boss can’t say “no” just because you have a disability. The ADA says they must try to help.

How Does the ADA Help in the Community?

The ADA also says:

  • Public places should have ramps, elevators, or automatic doors
  • Buses should be accessible to wheelchairs and walkers
  • You have the right to use service animals in most public places
  • Schools and programs must make space for everyone

This means you can go where you want and do what you love—just like everyone else.

Why Should You Know About the ADA?

Knowing your rights helps you:

  • Speak up if something feels unfair
  • Ask for help when you need it
  • Be more independent
  • Feel confident at work and in the community
