Everyone works in different ways. Some people use special tools or devices to help them do their jobs better. These tools are called assistive technology.

At Work Now Hawaii, we believe that the right tools can help people with disabilities work safely, feel confident, and succeed at work.

Let’s learn more about how assistive tech can make a big difference!

What is Assistive Technology?

Assistive technology (or “assistive tech”) is any tool, device, or software that helps a person do something more easily. At work, this could be:

  • A screen reader that reads text out loud
  • A special keyboard or mouse
  • Voice-to-text software (you speak, and it types!)
  • A chair with extra support
  • A timer or reminder app to help stay on schedule

These tools help people do their jobs in ways that work best for them.

How Does It Help at Work?

Assistive tech can help with many things, like:

Communication

If it’s hard to speak or hear, devices like speech apps or hearing aids can help you talk with coworkers and customers.

Reading and Writing

If reading is tough, screen readers or text-to-speech tools can help. If writing is hard, you can use voice typing to say what you want to write.

Memory and Focus

If it’s hard to remember tasks, you can use reminders, alarms, or picture schedules to stay on track.

Physical Support

If you have trouble moving your hands or body, there are tools like large keyboards, foot pedals, or desks that raise and lower.

Staying Independent

These tools help you do things on your own—which builds confidence and helps you feel proud at work.

Let’s meet Jay.

Jay uses a wheelchair and has trouble using a regular computer mouse. His job coach helped him find a trackball mouse, which is easier for him to control. Now, Jay does computer work all day—and he’s great at it!

How Can You Get Assistive Tech?

You can talk to:

  • A job coach
  • A Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) counselor
  • Your employer
  • A disability support agency

They can help you find the right tools—and even help you get them for free or at a low cost.

Work Smarter, Not Harder

With the right tools, everyone can do their best work. Assistive technology isn’t cheating—it’s just another way to get the job done.
