5 Easy Ways to Help Workers with Disabilities

Modern accessible office space featuring a height-adjustable desk with a blue ergonomic wheelchair in front of it. Nearby is another desk with a black ergonomic office chair, a computer monitor, task lighting, and small potted plants. The space is well-lit with minimalist decor and smooth flooring.

At Work Now Hawaii, we create and support employment for people living with disabilities—that’s our mission everyday!  Some people need a little help to feel comfortable and do a good job. These small changes are called accommodations—and they can really help!

Here are 5 easy ways to help someone at work:

  1. Flexible Work Hours
  • Some people feel better if they start work later, leave a little earlier, or take breaks during the day. Others may need a schedule that fits with bus times or caregiver support. That’s called flexible scheduling.
  • Why it helps:
    • It allows people to travel to work during safer or less crowded times.
    • It works better with public transit or mobility support schedules.
    • It gives people time to rest, go to appointments, or take care of their health.
    • Workers come in ready, focused, and less stressed.
  1. Clear Steps and Pictures
  • Some people do better when jobs are explained in steps. It also helps to use pictures or checklists.
  • Why it helps:
    • It makes tasks easier to follow and remember.
    • Workers feel more confident because they know exactly what to do.
    • They can work more independently without needing help all the time.
    • It helps make sure the job gets done the right way.
  1. Quiet Spaces or Headphones
  • Loud places can be difficult for some people. A quiet room or special headphones can help.
  • Why it helps:
    • It helps people stay calm and not feel overwhelmed.
    • With fewer distractions, they can focus better on their work.
    • It creates a more comfortable and peaceful workspace.
  1. Help from a Job Coach or Natural Support
  • Some people need help learning the job. A coach or natural support can show them what to do and answer questions.
  • Why it helps:
    • The employee can learn their job faster and more clearly.
    • They feel more supported and less nervous.
    • It helps them do their job well and meet the employer’s expectations.
    • Job coaches will notice your struggles and come up with strategies to minimize and/or eliminate those struggles so they become your abilities.
  1. Special Tools or Equipment (Assistive Technology – Click here for more info)
  • Some people may need different tools to do their job—like a big keyboard, a comfy chair, or voice-to-text software.
  • Why it helps:
    • These tools make work easier, safer, or more comfortable.
    • Everyone can do the job in a way that works best for them.
    • It allows people with different needs to succeed at work.

Why These Changes Matter

These small changes help workers feel happy, strong, and ready to work. They don’t always cost a lot, and they can help everyone—not just people with disabilities.

At Work Now Hawaii, we believe everyone should have a chance to work and feel proud.
