Programs and Services to Help You Live Independently in Hawaii

Landscape of Waikiki Beach to Diamond Head

There are so many ways to get support so you can live on your own! Here are some helpful programs for living independently in the community:

  • Cash Benefits

Having money is important for independence! It helps with things like rent, food, and other needs. When you live in a nursing home, they take care of managing your money. But when you live in the community, you may need to manage your own money or get help with it.

If you qualify, you could get monthly payments from the government to help cover your needs:

  1. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) provides monthly payments to people with disabilities who have low incomes. You don’t need work experience to get SSI.
  2. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) gives monthly payments to people with disabilities who have a work history.
  • Health Coverage

Health coverage is essential for living on your own! Here’s how you may qualify:

  1. If you receive SSDI, you’ll get Medicare after a couple of years. You may also qualify for Hawaii Medicaid based on your situation.
  2. If you get SSI, you’ll automatically receive Hawaii Medicaid.
  3. If you have a disability and are working, you can still get health coverage through the Hawaii Medicaid Buy-In Program for Working Adults with Disabilities if your income is within the limit.
  • In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS)

If you have Hawaii Medicaid, you might also get help from personal care attendants who can assist with daily tasks like getting dressed, bathing, cooking, cleaning, and more—so you can stay at home rather than in a facility

  • Long-Term Services and Supports

Hawaii offers special programs to help people with disabilities who need a higher level of care. These programs provide things like assistive technology, counseling, and job support.

Nonprofits and Community Organizations are here to guide and support you!

  1. Centers for Independent Living (CILs) offer advice on government services, housing, sign language interpreting, technology services, support groups, and help transitioning to independent living.
  2. The Arc of Hawaii assists people with developmental disabilities with self-advocacy training, peer support, and community training.

With the support of these programs and services, living independently in Hawaii can be a reality!
